Your Garden-Variety Cockroach

“We were looking for beetles, but couldn’t pass up some wood roaches,” says Drew Carhart, here with Chicago’s Field Museum of Natural History. He holds up a small glass vial with a bug inside.

“We found this under a dead log here at West Beach,” he tells me, “at the start of the Succession Trail.”

It doesn’t look like any cockroach I’ve seen before. “No, no, this isn’t the kind of roach you’d find in an apartment,” he explains. “This really is your garden-variety cockroach!”

I had never heard of this type of roach before but last week I had a Glen Burnie Landscaping contractor renovate my garden and they found an infestation of these in one of my trees! I’m lucky the tree wasn’t close to the house.
