← Back to A Brief History of the Astronomical Telescope III: Newton and his Reflecting Telescope

The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) placed into orbit by a space shuttle ‘Discovery’ in 1990 is a descendant of Newton’s reflector. NASA gives lists some of its specs as Mass: 11, 110 kg (24,500 lb): orbit height: 559 km (347 mi); orbit period: 96-97 minutes; and orbit speed: 7,500 m/s (25,000 ft/s)
