Exquisite Views of Patagonia’s Wetlands

Studying the little known wetlands of Patagonia, and especially the effects of desertification on the region, National Geographic Young Explorer Anand Varma takes a unique perspective. More precisely, he takes every perspective.

From close-up views of unusual flowers, to rodent’s-eye-views of the world where moss is grass and grass is forest, to epic landscapes seen only by a camera attached to a kite, Anand reveals his subject not as it would appear if you were there, but as it would appear if you were everywhere.

In the process, we not only gain an appreciation for the rich and diverse ecosystem of Patagonia, we are also reminded to see our own environments from multiple viewpoints: to step back and take it all in, and to stick our noses right in it; to see the mountains and the mole hills, and appreciate them all.

Explore the photo gallery above with Anand Varma’s original captions and learn more about the region. Then listen to Anand discuss his work and give photo tips on NGWeekend with Boyd Matson. You can also view many more of his photos on his personal website, VarmaPhoto.

Excelentes vistas de la patagonia, y pensar que hay personas que quieren hacer represas e inundar esto con agua para generar electricidad para las grandes industrias del cobre en el norte de chile.

Very beautiful vistas of the PATAGONIA, there’s people that’s thinking of making dams in this beatiful place and only for the mining industry in the north of chile
