Mayor’s Voices: Washington, DC Mayor Vincent C. Gray

In this exclusive address, Mayor Gray talks about his reasons for joining C40, announced Tuesday, and the opportunities the new membership brings:

“I’m proud to join with Mayor Bloomberg and the cities of the C40 so we can do the right thing — do our part to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and plan smartly for the change that is coming. We owe it to current and future generations to plan for their safety and for a strong and resilient economy.”

As the capital of the United States, Washington, DC has demonstrated a commitment to climate-friendly infrastructure, including green building practices, renewable electric power purchasing, and a world-class public transit system. Mayor Gray is committed to moving aggressively toward finalizing and implementing the city’s Sustainable DC and Climate Action Plans.

Looking at who the Mayor’s top advisers are and looking at the Mayor’s five year economic development plan, as well as the recent firing of a capable DDOE Director (who arguably played an important role in achieving he District’s membership in C40), I am concerned that there is a disconnect between action and words. I look forward to seeing real actions that support the Mayor’s sentiments about doing the “right thing” to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
