Franz Josef Land Expedition: A Day in Photos

National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Enric Sala is setting off to explore Franz Josef Land, one of the most remote archipelagos in the world, only 900 km from the North Pole. Home to polar bears, whales, seals and more, the team will investigate how global warming may be affecting this crucial ecosystem in ways we still do not fully comprehend.  Follow his adventures throughout the month.

The expedition continues on and, for the team, it’s business as usual. The crew arrives at Burke Bay on Luigi Island, one of 191 islands that make up Franz Josef Land archipelago. Team members Forrest and Paul (pictured) hike to the glacier to prepare for a longer transect. Meanwhile, the first heli-cam take-off to film Cape Flora’s lively walrus haul-out in the channel is a success. Walruses, known to be aggressive at times, have maintained civility and even permit their pictures to be taken by the expedition photographers! I am just wowed by the photos. Franz Josef Land is stunning, and the marine life amazing. Are the waters you are exploring protected? What are some of the threats facing them? Looking forward to learning more about this Arctic jewel.
