Watch Stunning First Simulation of Universe’s 13-Billion-Year Evolution

An early universe simulation

Everyone loves cartoons, even cosmologists. They just call them simulations.

Now, one of the great triumphs of modern cosmology—our understanding of how the universe evolved its kaleidoscope of stars, worlds, and galaxies—has been visualized in its first realistic simulation:

“Until now, no single simulation was able to reproduce the universe on both large and small scales simultaneously,” Mark Vogelsberger of MIT and the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, who led the simulation team, says in a statement. Using a computer program, the team grew the virtual galaxies in simulated time, starting from 12 million years after the big bang (which kicked off about 13.8 billion years ago), they report in a study released this week by the journal Nature.

Named Illustris, the simulation built its universe out of 10 billion tiny cubes stuffed inside a virtual box measuring some 350 million light-years on each side.

Stuffed inside those cubes was simulated cosmological gas, which cooled, compressed, and formed filaments of galaxies that resemble ones seen today. As it evolved, its early cosmos resembled the real one, which is filled with small, energetic galaxies revealed by Hubble Space Telescope observations.

“If this all sounds somewhat complicated, do not be fooled: It is extremely complicated,” University of Maryland astronomer Michael Boylan-Kolchin, says in a commentary accompanying the study.

The simulation still has a way to go, Boylan-Kolchin adds, since it does not produce the biggest of black holes seen in the early universe or the dwarf galaxies that circle the Milky Way today. But thanks to the simulation, he says in the commentary, “creating a realistic virtual Universe of gas, stars, black holes and dark matter is already a reality. ”

Dark Energy/Matter account for 96.4% of matter as recently surveyed from the CMB. Ordinary energy/matter account for just 4.6%.

Assuming a dynamic equilibrium between the materialization of ordinary energy/matter from dark energy/matter, and the de-materialization of ordinary energy/matter into dark energy/matter, then, it would seem that de-materialization is predominant or that dark energy/matter are the more preferred states, so far.

Further, the amount of dark energy is almost as much as three times the equivalent of dark matter surveyed. On the premise of speculation, it just may be that dark energy is the most preferred state of any, accounting for a whooping 71.4% of the universe, and that just may explain why the expansion of the universe is constantly accelerating! Into Dark Energy?

Disclaimer; The preceding statements are not calculated to state anything of any scientific or other significance. They purely meant to be an astronomical pun, or a play of words, which should be deemed to be neither useful (nor useless) for any particular purpose as the case may be.

When physical units, constants, and dimensions are thoroughly examined, it becomes blatantly obvious that there are major mistakes in what is considered to be mainstream physics.

Analyzing the constants we can see there are two different types of charges, magnetic and electrostatic, and not just the electrostatic (elementary) charge. We can also see that all charge should always be notated as distributed (squared) relative to mass. Fixing these two errors allows for an easy unification of the fundamental forces using simple force laws.

A further analysis shows that physical matter arises from non-material causes. Even stranger, the non-material causes arise from a primary type of force that best can be described as “Will.”

And when the forces and their interaction with matter are examined we can see that there is, indeed, dark matter, and that dark matter continually converts to visible matter and visible matter continually collapses back to dark matter. The process of creating matter and destroying it takes from 13 billion to 19 billion years.

The Universe was not created from an infinitely small point, it always has been and always will be. The Universe is constantly turning over like a large boiling cauldron. It is driven by the primary force. This primary force has a value of 1.21 x 10^44 newton per quantum of space. It pervades and drives the entire Universe. Something with near infinite force, that pervades the entire Universe, and constantly keeps it going fits the description of what some people call “God. ”

It may not be the Jewish version of God, or the Muslim version of God, or the Vedic version of God, or the Aboriginal version of God, but it does provide a solid foundation for those perceptions of God. There really is a Creative Force that also maintains the Universe and we can see it clearly in physics if we have the right paradigm to view it with.

We cannot prove or disprove there is a god,
The bible was written by man and religion has created many variations of the bible and gods, the bible is incomprehensible gobblity gook and designed to answer questions without substantative research. We have all evolved over 40,000 generations to the species we are today along with everything else in nature on earth. Evolution is a process in nature for the preservation of species through different environments, the time period for humans to comprehend this is too immense so we have made up things to explain what we dont understand without research. We dont know what we dont know just because we don’t understand it does not mean we immediately put this down to god. We need to keep challenging oursleves and our beliefs constantly with open minds to truely understand who we are and our origins of us and the universe.

I respect the simulation, but I think science and physics may be a bit beyond it’s usefulness in such endeavors. Time is not linear. Yes, we age, but that is an organic process that occurs over the course of many revolutions. Our revolutions refer to Our Sun…an individual star perhaps as unique as a snowflake. Perhaps Earth years cannot be assumed to exist before the Earth or Sun system existed. If this is the evolution of the Universe, where are it’s parents? What came before it? What comes after it – more infinite empty linear time? That’s not useful. I think it’s better to say, “Ok, here are Earth’s elements and here is what we see in our night sky, where does our Earth home go from here – land, sea, Moon, Mars. It’s a giant treehouse.” Measurement only has meaning in comparison…an inch does not exist unless two inches also exists. Perhaps our Earth Year is a measurement which leads to completely different conclusions than a Kepler-169f year. Consider beings in existence so much differently evolved than ourselves that they are able to hide themselves from our technology. Consider the possibility of an intergalactic law ALREADY in existence protecting us from being used or consumed by other more intelligent beings. This is not to disrespect ourselves, but it’s probably more interesting to imagine an infinite Earth life, rather than a finite Universal life, and work within those boundaries. You should perfect a simulation of the Solar System first. That may be all you can do for the time being, anyway. Once we can stand at the edge of the Solar System, then we can say, ok, “Now the galaxy.” (thank you for the permission to comment on the article.)

Take this complex computer simulation of an evolving universe to its logical conclusion. With quantum processors that are sure to be perfected we will eventually accomplish some incredible things, like run computer simulated universes that are indistinguishable from our own “real” universe, even complete with simulated minds. Some new books out that discuss the mind boggling implications of all of this (such as, “The Evolution of Simulated Universes”). We are truly on the verge of a technological revolution.

God created Everything. He is in the details of Everything. where ever you go, in mind, spirit, heart, space, quark of quantums to outer space and sprockets, to separating soul and spirit, God has already been there ! Faith is God’s mindful mechanism in a material world for salvation, for death had been absolute but in Gods perspective, there is no justice when laws are absolute, so his son came to die, to overcome that for sake of Life as we mortal men cannot overcome, achieve on our own. This consolation of what he has done for us, delivers Joy to the soul.
We don’t have souls, we are souls, we have bodies. And in being with God, not merely a psycological state of mind But an inner tranquility based on peace with God–the peaceful state of those whos sins are forgiven. God transcends all understanding. Philippians 4: 8-9..

@ Victor Nunnally Using this type of simulation for humanity’s benefit (other than satisfying our insatiable curiosity) is an excellent idea.

The Illustris website states they used a “state of the art numerical code and a comprehensive physical model” to achieve this simulation. Using comprehensive data in this kind of format, it seems to me that multiple experiments and scenarios could be conducted to predict outcomes and solve real-world problems.

This simulation, even though it does not yet accurately reflect our observable universe, is very promising as a tool. I, too, was hoping to see the simulation’s progression of the future universe.

The more i watch similar videos, the more i am lost.In fact it is too complicate for a human being to accept the laws of nature because always there will be WHY.The WHY drives us crazy. The WHY is pulling us to progress. But there are too many WHYs.Let’s look in another perspective, shell we?We all know that sometimes the simplest answer is the right answer no matter how easy that answer it is.I am not going to use the OBVIOUS answer since we simply don’t know it.So my theory is that every single thing in the universe as we know it or don’t exists thanks to the force of the Nature. It is the nature that rules us and gives everything. We live by its laws and die by them, even that die is probably not the right word.We are trying to understand it laws, how they work,WHY they work but these are not the right questions to ask. What we should be asking ourselves really is not what was like The Big Bang and how it affected the entire universe but WHY the Nature decided to give us everything?I am not talking about God or some kind of supreme creature,i am talking about purpose, meaning of existence. Not just us the humans but the hole thing. When we get this answer than we will understand how it works.

Just to clarify a few things, if I may:
“I agree with running simulations to learn how they differ from our theories”
Simulations aren’t run to learn how they differ from our theories, they are *predictions* of our theories obtained with the help of a computer – and as such they can be compared to what we observed about reality. If simulations differed from observation, that would mean that our theories are wrong; but here we have a stunning resemblance, which gives us great confidence that our theories are essentially correct.

“I believe God created the universe from nothing.”
Since God is *something*, that makes him a part of the universe (or multiverse), so what you’re really saying is that you believe that universe (in the form of a complicated being u call God) either already existed (and has, perhaps) always existed, or, indeed, just spawned into existance, from nothing. And then it somehow created our universe.
Nice story, but why should we believe it? It is equally possible that our universe came into existence without God, maybe from nothing, maybe from another universe, or maybe it simply always existed.

“Parts of this simulation are false. The universe did not come from a “big bang,” if there was a big bang and nothing existed, how did the explosion start and why aren’t the galaxies, planets, and stars still moving away from each other since resistance does not exist in space, and the universe is not billions of years old.”
First, this simulation doesn’t start with the Big Bang at all. Second, this simulation is not a story, it’s neither true or false – it’s a prediction of our theories that happens to mach what we observed about the universe, thus vindicating our theories.
Finally, galaxies *are* still moving away from each other – that’s why we think there was a big bang!
The universe (well, our universe) is about 13.8 billion years old according to measurement, and so far we have very good reasons to think this number is correct.

I just wonder how can something be that clever to build the whole universe and he exit from nothing… I think if we said that universe is made itself from nothing is more realistic. And also I think the universe is much more bigger than someone created it, just to know either people on planet earth will pray for him or not….
good job and thank you all scientists for creating this amazing Simulation… :)

“if there was a big bang and nothing existed, how did the explosion start”

Justin, wisdom begins with knowing what you are arguing against. No one claims that “nothing existed.”

“and why aren’t the galaxies, planets, and stars still moving away from each other”

    They are.

“since resistance does not exist in space,”

There’s this relatively new theory called gravity.

“and the universe is not billions of years old.”

    If you say so.

I agree with running simulations to learn how they differ from our theories, but considering we cannot predict weather for even a few weeks (which likely has fewer variables) should humble any degree that the model is only a small step towards a richer truth of our existance.

The Genesis creation account IS the STORY of the Big Bang and evolution. Like the parables used by Jesus it is not to be taken literally, but figuratively. Like the parables of Jesus it takes very complex truths and puts them in contexts that people can understand. The truth is the Big Bang proves the central claim of the Genesis creation account which states there was a time before the Universe and a single moment in which creation began. The 6 days of creation speak to the evolving nature of creation/the universe. Science and faith are NOT mutually exclusive. Use the mind, the intellect and curiosity that God gave you.

So take it or leave it. No one shoves an opinion down anyone’s throat unless you are so bothered by it you seem to choke on it. Which in my opinion means you are struggling with both opinions and are having difficulty with both. I would think a wise thing to do is to leave your mind open and continue to investigate. I believe God created the universe from nothing. How He did that is a mystery that may not be easily or may never be solved by man. He had an infinite time to think about it and plan it and I believe He did plan it very well. Saturn’s rings are not a coincidence. Neither is the position of the Earth. Neither is our existence among a Universe which is void of any other life forms. The Dinosaurs did exist but they were not as old as scientists would have us believe. God did not create the heavens and the earth in 6 literal 24 hour days but over a long period of time perhaps millions or billions of years. He then turned His attention to the Earth over 6 creative epochs referred to as ‘days’ in the Bible. Human history is only about 6000 years. Ancient civilisations and races of men on earth started after the flood of Noah and sprang from his three sons and their wives namely the Europeans, the Asians and the Africans.

I see no difference in this – It (Big Bang Theory) merely states that all the space, energy, matter, and time that we now see as the universe existed as a singularity which then exploded and freed everything to assume its current state. (What made the singularity?)

And this – Actually, the bible version is the only fable in which everthing springs from nothing. There was nothing, then god appeared (from who knows where), said “let there be everything” and everything appeared.

Both science & Religion hit a wall….if the Big Bang exploded the universe into being what made the big bang bang? Ie what came before
If God made the universe, who made God???

Surely you don’t agree with every one of the several other conflicting opinions in this comment thread, yet you don’t feel any of them are threatening you. I didn’t read one sentence that said, “You MUST agree that God created the universe or else!” Every person has a right to offer his or her own opinions, and that’s what we’re doing here. In my humble opinion, God created the heavens and the earth. He also gave us the curiosity and intelligence to unravel some of the mysteries of our world, and to theorize about those we’re not sure of yet. We will never stop searching, and we will never know it all. But we will always stand amazed.

I think the real question is not what’s out there, but what’s in here. The human race has a major problem and it’s called curiosity. We are so curious about the unknown that we forget the known.

As humans we tempt to look for reasons why we are here and what’s hidden from us. Through our life we keep on looking for the secret. Either it’s called god, magic, or any other word used to describe the superior force.

What we forget is that this magic, god, etc. is only found between a connection that causes mutual progress. That’s the formula for love (resumed).

So, all I want to say is instead of escaping all the time from the real problem, like for example looking for the solution in the space or in the micro-organic world, we should see the world in our level and try, at least try, to help out others and make the world better and if there’s free time left then look for other things,
but I think people are not conscious of the real problems here.

@Justin Tolin “…everything is just too complex and too In order, such as how everything is made for it’s specific needs, to have come by mere chance and circumstance.”

You have it backwards – things are complex and well suited for specific needs because they have evolved that way. Things that are poorly suited for their environment die off.

Religion is faith (vs reason) – in other words – belief in something regardless of fact. Religion starts with a belief system and shoehorns everything into that mystical framework. A discussion with someone who tries to disguise faith as reason is not going to be fruitful.

Science and God are not mutually exclusive. Just because you believe in one doesn’t mean you can’t also believe in the other. Who is to say that God in his own way made the elements behave the way they do and had it all planned to evolve slowly so as not to have things go drastically wrong! Nobody ever said that God had a 24 hour clock that was a single day. But I do believe that the wonders of the universe are just that, Wonderful and Beautiful. And I also find it fascinating that we now have the knowledge and information to make such a simulation and have it be so Awesome to watch. Good work guys, And keep these things going. It’s the only way we can truly begin to understand the secrets of the universe!!!

“… simulations match our observations so well…”

No kidding. If you program the simulation using formulas based on your observation, it is likely to produce a result that matches your observations.”

Loved the video and work going into same… but what a duh-wee moment that was.

Wait just one minute…Where’s Jesus riding a dinosaur, and the arc leaving the unicorns behind , and I think this was only supposed to take six days…have we been misinformed?!?!?!?

Evolution and the ” big bang theory” are an hypothesis, which is another word for a guess, So, why are you treating these as fact!

Parts of this simulation are false. The universe did not come from a “big bang,” if there was a big bang and nothing existed, how did the explosion start and why aren’t the galaxies, planets, and stars still moving away from each other since resistance does not exist in space, and the universe is not billions of years old. This is how you prove it. The Bible says in Genesis 1:1,” In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” That is the very first verse in the Bible. This verse is true because if you look at the world today, through chemistry and just observation, everything is just too complex and too In order, such as how everything is made for it’s specific needs, to have come by mere chance and circumstance. The world did not evolve because if it did why don’t we see mutations today. The world is not billions of years old; it isn’t even ten thousand years old. The rate at which the Earth is rotating is getting slower, though it is very, very slow. If you were to back track from now to thousands of years ago, you would find that even ten thousand years ago the rotation of Earth would be so great that the continents would be squished at the equator because of centripetal* force. *I think that is the right word. God made the Earth with everything we see today, except for known species that have gone extinct including dinosaurs which died right after the Flood because of drastic climate changes and lack of proper food, and He made everything just right.

This is awesome. I hope the Oculus Rift technology can be used in tandem with this at some point so we can travel through our known universe. I can’t help but think that this looks like a portion of a growing organisim of some sort when viewed at distance like this video does. That is just my opinion.

Since noone was there (except God and His angels) when all this went down, I will put this in the same catagory as watching Planet of the Apes.

Given the size of the human brain and the infinite size and complexities of the Universe, one must stand in awe before the intellectual capacities of a tiny fraction of our race that has been able to figure out so much about the Cosmos. It’s almost like a few microscopic bacteria being able to figure out the physical complexities of the earth and the workings of the human mind.
