Video Tribute Marks 40th Anniversary of Sheldrick Elephant Haven

By Nicky Campbell

At a time when as many 35,000 African elephants are being slaughtered every year for their ivory, the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s Orphans Project is a wonderful place. It’s a vital symbol of the elephants’ fight for their very survival as a species, and a cradle of hope in the horror of their slaughter.

In the moving footage of the video above you see the beauty and otherworldly qualities of these extraordinary beings. You also see the love and dedication of their keepers and that very special bond.

Over the last 40 years Sheldrick have rescued more than 200 of these highly intelligent animals and given them another chance of a life where they belong; in the wild. It’s always a massive undertaking, but it’s been an astounding collective achievement.

With the poaching crisis unabated and the increasing problems of human wildlife conflict, @DSWT has never been so needed and the support of the public never so appreciated.

Nicky Campbell is a journalist, broadcaster and wildlife campaigner. He and the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust have released ‘Sacred Eyes’ to mark their 40th anniversary.
